What is SEM (search engine marketing)?

Search engine marketing (SEM) is the practice of buying advertising placements on search engines, such as Google Ads, so that a business's ads appear when people search for related terms. Advertisers usually pay each time someone clicks an ad.

Search engine marketing, usually shortened to SEM, is the paid side of search advertising. A business bids on keywords, writes short text ads, and pays when a searcher clicks through. Google Ads is the most common platform, and Bing Ads works in a similar way. In Malaysia, the ads often appear above or beside organic results for queries such as "accounting software KL" or "aircond service Penang," with a small "Sponsored" label marking them as paid.

SEM is often confused with SEO, or search engine optimisation. SEO aims to earn a higher place in the unpaid results through site content and technical work. SEM buys placement directly, so results can appear within hours of a campaign going live. That speed is the main reason businesses use it, especially when they need leads quickly or want to test which offers and keywords bring in enquiries.

Why it matters: search captures people who already have a need in mind, so ads shown on those queries can reach buyers at the moment they are looking. Because cost is tied to clicks, budgets can be capped and adjusted. Results depend heavily on keyword choice, ad copy, landing pages, and tracking, which is why many small and mid-sized Malaysian firms hand the account to an agency. Businesses looking for providers that manage paid search alongside other channels can start with the full-service digital marketing listings in this directory.

SEM is a term for the whole discipline of paid search advertising. Individual platforms, ad formats, and bidding methods fall under it.
