Search intent

Search intent is the goal a person has when they type a query into a search engine, such as learning something, finding a specific site, comparing options, or completing a purchase. Search engines aim to match each results page to the intent behind the query.

When someone types a query into Google, they usually want something specific. Search intent is the name for that want. The same keyword can carry different intent depending on the words around it, the device used, and what the person is trying to get done. Search engines try to read that intent and show pages that fit it, which is why SEO work starts with understanding what searchers are actually after.

Most search intent falls into four broad types:

  • Informational: the searcher wants to learn or understand something, such as "how does Google Business Profile verification work" or "what is a meta description."
  • Navigational: the searcher wants a particular website or brand page, such as typing a company name plus "login" or "contact."
  • Commercial: the searcher is researching before a decision and comparing options, for example "best SEO agency in Kuala Lumpur reviews."
  • Transactional: the searcher is ready to act, such as signing up, hiring, or buying a service.

Why it matters: a blog post that answers a question well will rarely rank for a query where the searcher wants to hire someone, and a service page will struggle to rank for a plain how-to question. Matching content to intent is one of the main reasons pages get found and then get clicked. In Malaysia, queries often mix English with Bahasa Malaysia, so intent can shift between languages even when the topic stays the same.

If you are looking for help building content that fits these queries, the content SEO providers listed in this directory are a good starting point.
