What is schema markup?

Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary from Schema.org that is added to a web page as structured data, usually in JSON-LD format, so search engines can read facts like business names, reviews, and FAQs. When the markup is valid and eligible, it can trigger rich results such as star ratings and expandable questions in search listings.

Schema markup is a block of code added to a web page that labels its content in a form search engines can read without guessing. The vocabulary is maintained at Schema.org, and the most common format today is JSON-LD, a script tag placed in the page header or body that lists details such as a business name, address, opening hours, service types, reviews, or a set of questions and answers. The visible page does not change. The label sits alongside the content and tells Google and other engines what the content means.

The reason it matters is clarity. A line of text reading "Kuala Lumpur, 50450" could be an address, a phone prefix, or a random number. Marked up as a PostalAddress inside a LocalBusiness entity, it is unambiguous. For agencies listed in a Malaysian directory, that clarity helps search engines match a firm to the right city, service area, and client reviews.

Markup also makes some pages eligible for rich results, the enhanced listings with star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, or event details. Eligibility is never guaranteed. Search engines decide whether to display these features, and they require that the marked-up content actually appears on the page and matches what users see. Misleading or fabricated review markup can lead to penalties.

Schema markup is one part of technical SEO, the work of making a site crawlable, indexable, and well organized. Providers who handle that work are listed under technical SEO in this directory.
