What is keyword cannibalization?

Keyword cannibalization happens when two or more pages on the same website target the same search query, so they compete with each other instead of one page ranking clearly. It can weaken rankings and confuse search engines about which page should appear.

Keyword cannibalization is what happens when several pages on one website try to rank for the same search term. A Malaysian SEO agency might publish a service page, a blog post, and a case study that all aim at "SEO agency KL," for example. Search engines then have to choose which of those pages to show, and they often spread the ranking signals (links, clicks, relevance) across them instead of concentrating them on one strong page.

The problem matters because it can hold back the pages a business cares about most. Instead of one page climbing into the top results, two or three pages sit lower, and they may keep swapping places in search results from one week to the next. Visitors can land on a page that is not the best match for their intent, such as a general article when they wanted a pricing or service page.

Cannibalization is usually a site structure and content planning issue rather than a sign of bad writing. It tends to appear when a site grows without a clear map of which page owns which topic, or when similar articles are published on overlapping keywords in both English and Bahasa Malaysia. Fixing it generally involves deciding on one primary page per query and reworking or consolidating the rest.

For a directory user, the term helps explain why a provider's site may rank inconsistently even when its content looks thorough. Businesses that handle content and on-page structure for clients are the ones who deal with this most directly. You can find SEO providers offering content and search work in the content SEO category.
