What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile is a free listing that lets a business appear in Google Maps and local search results. It holds details such as the business name, address, phone number, opening hours, categories, photos, and customer reviews.

A Google Business Profile is the free listing a business claims through Google so that it can appear in Google Maps, the local pack (the map block shown above regular results for local searches), and Google Search's business panel. It is managed through a Google account and is free to create, though Google may ask for verification before the listing goes live.

The profile holds the core facts a searcher looks for: the business name, street address or service area, phone number, website link, opening hours, primary and secondary categories, and a description. Owners can also add photos, posts, services, and products, and they receive reviews from customers that appear on the listing. Each of these fields feeds into how Google decides whether a business is relevant and close enough to a searcher to show.

For a Malaysian SEO agency, the profile matters because most of its local visibility in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, Penang, or Johor Bahru depends on it. A complete, accurate profile is the baseline for local search, and businesses without one are largely invisible in map results. Agencies that offer local SEO usually work on these listings, but the profile itself belongs to the business, not the agency, so the owner should keep control of the account.

The profile was previously known as Google My Business and Google Places. You may still see those older names in articles and tools.
