What is anchor text?

Anchor text is the clickable words in a hyperlink. Search engines read it as a hint about what the linked page is about, so its wording affects how that page is understood.

Anchor text is the visible, clickable wording of a hyperlink. When a page says "our guide to local keyword research" and that phrase links to another URL, the phrase is the anchor text. Search engines read it alongside the surrounding copy to work out what the target page covers, which is why it sits at the centre of most link-building and on-page discussions in SEO.

Anchor text is usually grouped by how closely it matches the page's target topic. An exact match anchor uses the target keyword itself, such as "SEO agency in Kuala Lumpur". A partial match uses a variation or related phrase. A branded anchor uses the company or product name, such as "Agency Name Sdn Bhd". A generic anchor uses neutral wording like "read more", "this site" or "here". A naked URL anchor shows the web address itself.

Why it matters: a natural spread of anchor types tends to look more like how people actually link, while a profile dominated by identical keyword-rich phrases can look manufactured. For that reason, many Malaysian SEO teams treat branded and generic anchors as the normal baseline and use descriptive phrases where they genuinely help a reader. Anchor text also helps users, since a clear label tells them where a link goes before they click.

Anchor text applies both to links pointing into a site from elsewhere and to internal links between a site's own pages. Internal anchors are fully under the site owner's control and are often the easiest place to make topic signals clearer.
